DTF Pressing Instructions

  • At ModFirst Apparel, we want your Custom DTF Transfers to look amazing and last wash after wash. The correct application method is essential for professional-quality prints that your customers will love.
This guide will walk you through step-by-step DTF pressing instructions, covering everything from preparation to aftercare.

Why Follow Proper DTF Pressing Instructions?

Direct-to-Film (DTF) transfers are durable, vibrant, and versatile — but only if they are applied correctly. Using the wrong temperature, pressure, or peel technique can cause cracking, peeling, or fading.
    Following our process ensures:

    • Long-lasting designs
    • Sharp, vibrant colors
    • Strong wash resistance
    • Professional finish on every garment

    What You’ll Need

Before starting, make sure you have the right tools:

    • Heat press machine (clamshell or swing-away recommended)
    • Teflon sheet or parchment paper
    • Lint roller
    • DTF transfer
    • Garment (cotton, polyester, or blends)
    • Heat-resistant gloves (optional for safety)

    Stepby-Step DTF Pressing Instructions

Step 1 – Preheat the Garment

Place the garment on the press and preheat for 5 seconds at 320°F (160°C).
    This:

    • Removes excess moisture
    • Smooths wrinkles
    • Creates a better surface for adhesion

    Step2 – Position the Transfer

    • Place your DTF transfer white backing side down, image facing up.
    • Center and align the design where you want it to appear.
    • Use heat-resistant tape if needed to keep the transfer in place.

Step 3 – Set Your Heat Press

    • Temperature: 320°F (160°C)
    • Time: 15 seconds
    • Pressure: Very firm (important for strong adhesion)

Step 4 – Press the Transfer

    • Close the press and apply very firm pressure for the full 15 seconds.
    • Avoid opening early or reducing pressure — this will weaken the bond.

Step 5 – Let It Cool Before Peeling

    • Remove the garment from the press and let it cool until warm to the touch.
    • Peel the film warm or completely cool — both work, but peeling too hot can cause lifting.

Step 6 – Second Press for Durability

    • Place a parchment paper or Teflon sheet over the design.
    • Press again for 5 seconds at the same temperature.
    • This final step improves wash resistance and gives a smooth finish.

    Aftercare Instructions

To make your DTF transfers last as long as possible:

    • Wash inside-out in cold water.
    • Use mild detergent.
    • Avoid bleach and fabric softener.
    • Tumble dry low or hang dry.
    • Do not iron directly on the design.

    Troubleshooting Common Issues

    • Design is peeling: Check pressure — it must be firm.
    • Colors look dull: Ensure temperature is correct and the garment was preheated.
    • Edges lifting after wash: Always do the second press with parchment paper.
